If you see cracks starting to form on the soil, then that’s a good indication that watering the yard isa good idea.  Just stretch your hose out anywhere between 24-36 feet away from the house and let it soak into the soil to prevent any cracking from happening. Some larger trees such as; Weeping Willow, Mesquite and Cottonwood tend to have a rooting system that stays fairly shallow. This tends for water to be sucked up from the roots faster, worsening any drought you may be dealing with. Roots also grow into the foundation and break it apart, so that is something to keep an eye on as well.
